Batizado

The London Palmares School of Capoeira Angola present their 4th Batizado 2006!
A Major Brazilian Cultural event, bringing the heartbeat of Brazil to Central London!

The batizado ceremony

Batizado translates as “Baptism” and it is a traditional Capoeira ceremony. It is where beginner students will be recognised as “Capoeiristas” (players of Capoeira) and will officially become part of the Capoeira Angola Palmares group. For more advanced students it is a grading ceremony that recognises the skills they have developed with Capoeira. It is the most important event in Capoeira.

Students will be asked to play with a master and demonstrate their skills, potentials and knowledge. The master may “baptise” the students as he wishes (with a ‘Rasteira’ (a sweep), ‘Bencao’ (a kick), a hug, by shaking hands or any other Capoeira move!). The students must not stop playing until the master considers them baptised – he will decide when the game is finished. More advanced students should be prepared to play with more than one master.

At the end of the game the students will be given their belts (the colour will be according to their level). The master sometimes gives the students nicknames that relate to how they play Capoeira.

Workshops

Intensive Capoeira and Berimbau workshops with Mestre Lincoln (New York), plus Mestre Axé and Contra-Mestre Hailton (Austria) are open to everyone, not just the students of Capoeira Angola Palmares.

These workshops are a preparation for the Batizado, but they will also provide students and participants with a chance to polish their Capoeira techniques. The Mestres will pass on their skills and develop what the participants have already learnt. Each Mestre will teach different things on different days. It is also when the Mestres get to know the students and participants.

The whole course of workshops cost £100 OR between £12 and £20 per workshop.

For the Berimbau workshops you must already own a Berimbau or if you don’t have one, you can buy them before the Berimbau workshops.

There will be 2 Capoeira workshops, 1 Berimbau workshop and a Roda
